My experience of <em>'Mario'</em> starts and ends with <em>'Mario Kart'</em>, which I haven't actually played since back in the day on my Nintendo DS and even then I had no understanding of the franchise itself; just treated it as a normal racing game. The screenplay is admittedly very bare bones, and the characters lack depth, but the film still manages to capture the essence of the beloved video game franchise.
