Movie Knight
How we rate movies
Every Movie Knight parent guide answers two questions: Is this OK for my kids, and what should I be ready for? Here is exactly how we get to the answer on each page.
Two age answers, and why they're different
Each guide shows a family badge (like “All ages”) and a “Best from age” number. They answer different questions.
The badge tells you who can safely be in the room. “Best from age” tells you the youngest age most kids will really follow and get the most out of it. That depends on things like story length, pacing, and emotional themes such as illness or loss, not only on content parents might object to.
Example: You Gotta Believe is All ages, best from age 7. Nothing in it should worry you if a four-year-old is on the couch. But a story about a parent's illness lands best with kids who are 7 and up.
Our family badges
- All ages: Rated G or PG (or the TV equivalents: TV-G, TV-Y, TV-PG or TV-Y7). Every content score is 2 or lower, and it's best from age 7 or younger. Safe to press play with the whole room watching.
- Watch with a parent: Rated G or PG (or the TV equivalents), but at least one content score is 3 or higher, or the story suits kids older than 7. Incomplete content or age guidance also stays in this tier. Fine for most kids, with a few moments worth a parent nearby. Check the scores to see which ones.
- Teens: Rated PG-13 or TV-14. Built for older kids and teens, whatever the scores say.
- Age guidance pending: We haven't confirmed a supported rating for this title yet.
We don't carry R, NC-17 or TV-MA titles.
“All ages” is something a title earns from its content scores. We never give it based on the official rating alone.
Content scores, 0 to 10
Every guide scores five categories: Violence & peril · Language · Drinking, drugs & smoking · Romance & sensuality · Scary moments. Each score measures how intense that kind of content is in the title.
- 0: None (shown in green)
- 1–2: Mild (shown in green)
- 3–4: Moderate (shown in blue)
- 5: Moderate (shown in amber)
- 6–10: Strong (shown in amber)
When our language or substance scores run higher than a G or PG rating suggests, we flag it on the page so you're not surprised.
How a guide is made
Each guide starts as an original draft written with AI assistance, using what's known about the film plus our catalog data: rating, genres, runtime and synopsis. Drafts follow strict rules. They are written in our own words, never copied or paraphrased from another review site, and stay general rather than guess at details. Our team then checks and corrects them, including BYU-Pathway students we employ around the world. Reviews from parents in our community appear separately on each title page.
