What is the best space movie for a 5-year-old?

For most younger children, we would start with WALL-E. It is visually engaging, relatively gentle and full of robots and spacecraft without the sustained danger of many live-action space movies. Jungle Beat: The Movie is another good choice for a child who wants aliens without scary alien invasions.

What is the best space movie for an 8-year-old?

It depends on the child, but Flight of the Navigator is a good place to investigate first. Check the individual Movie Knight parent guides before deciding, particularly for children who are sensitive to peril or frightening scenes.

What space movies are good for kids interested in science?

Our top five are October Sky, Hidden Figures, Apollo 13, The Martian and Project Hail Mary. Together they cover rocketry, mathematics, engineering, NASA, survival science and scientific problem-solving.

Are there any true-story space movies for kids?

Yes. Apollo 13, Hidden Figures and October Sky are all based on real people and events connected to the American space program.

Is The Martian appropriate for kids?

The Martian is better suited to older kids and teens than young children. Its STEM content is outstanding, but parents should be aware of strong language, an injury scene, life-and-death peril and brief nonsexual nudity. Read the full Movie Knight guide before making the call for your child.

Is Ender's Game a kids' movie?

Ender's Game stars children, but that does not make it a young children's movie. It deals with military training, bullying, violence, war and difficult moral questions. We would treat it primarily as a teen or mature-tween choice.

What is a good first Star Wars movie for kids?

We would still begin with the 1977 Star Wars, later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. It introduces Luke, Leia, Han, Darth Vader, the Force and the basic universe without requiring children to know anything beforehand.
